What does legacy mean to you?
Monthly Snippet on Estate Law
“Legacy” is a word often used in connection with estate planning. This word has always struck me as a bit stiff and impersonal.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “Legacy” (noun) has a few definitions:
1. an amount of money or property left to someone in a will.
2. the long-lasting impact of particular events, actions, etc. that took place in the past or of a person’s life.
I like to think of estate planning from both the tangible and asset perspectives and the idea of leaving a lasting positive impact for loved ones. This does not necessarily involve wealth. So much of the estate planning process is about getting in touch with clients' deeply personal values. I enjoy getting to know clients and their family dynamics and helping them to identify and articulate their core values. Then, I work to ensure those values can be meaningfully communicated in my clients’ estate plans. Of course, we will work through the legal ramifications of the design of an estate plan. In addition, at Maguire Law, we will personalize the plan.
We will use intentional language and ensure that your family members hear your final message in a way that is true and authentic to you.
