A Day of Service and Gratitude with the Maryland Pro Bono Resource Center’s Home Preservation Project

Home

This month, I had the opportunity to volunteer with the Maryland Pro Bono Resource Center’s (PBRC) Home Preservation Project (HPP). PBRC provides pro bono legal representation to low-income homeowners in order to keep them in their homes. The goal is to “help long-time members of communities age in place, preserve intergenerational wealth (which for [their] clients is generally equity in the home, provide security for families, and protect the rights of homeowners.” One of the primary ways this is done is through monthly pro bono estate planning clinics like the one I participated in this week.

I spent the day preparing estate plans for low-income Baltimore City residents. While many may think that estate planning is only for those with significant assets, that is simply not the case. Through these monthly clinics, PBRC seeks to foster community stability through the efficient transfer of property through wills and to enable residents to maintain their affairs through powers of attorney should they become ill and incapacitated. The clinic also prepares advance medical directives so that residents have empowered medical agents to assist in medical decision-making and provide for the execution of their end-of-life wishes. These documents can have a significant impact during times of illness and can make a difference for generations to come.

The PBRC clinic was an absolutely wonderful way to spend a day using my training and skills to serve the community of Baltimore. I met so many wonderful people and was reminded (as I often am) of what a privilege it is to serve clients.

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on what a year it has been. I truly love the work I do. Whether it be representing a client in litigation or getting to know a client and their family to help them design and execute an estate plan, with each client and with each matter, I have the opportunity to learn, to grow, and to serve.

I was also reminded of what a gift it can be to share even just a few hours of concern and attention to those in need. As we approach the holiday season, perhaps all of us can find a way to contribute to our communities with whatever resources, talents, or time we have to share.
